TANA Netting relaunched a production unit at its factory in Lahore, Pakistan, completely managed and staffed by women. The female-only space at H. Sheikh Noor-ud-Din & Sons (HSNDS) accommodates 200 female workers, and is already operating at a 95% capacity. It is expected that the facility will continue to expand throughout the year, reaching a potential strength of 500 workers by the end of 2017.
Women to play a key role in the production process
The unit forms a central part of the production process of TANA Netting’s DawaPlus® 2.0 Long-Lasting Insecticidal Nets (LLINs). The women will undertake the stitching of the nets, of which six million are produced each month, and then the subsequent folding and packaging. The female friendly space provides a clean, air conditioned working environment, and dedicated washrooms.
Female empowerment at the top of the corporate agenda
Whilst it is estimated that women comprise only 25% of the Pakistani labour market, NRS International, the parent company of TANA Netting, has long been dedicated to increasing opportunities for women. In 2015, it signed the CEO Statement of Support for the Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs) under the UN Global Compact. These define seven principles that form a framework promoting the advancement of women at work, in the marketplace and community.

Dedicated to continued female empowerment
This philosophy has since translated into concrete female empowerment achievements. In its Dubai headquarters, a significant proportion of senior management are women, and comprise 56% of the total office workforce. The reopening of the female-only unit at its Pakistan factory is the latest step on a road which will see even higher levels of female participation. We also are partnering with a UK-based NGO to incorporate additional training and development opportunities.
Through the considered and dedicated implementation of female empowerment policies, NRS International is making significant progress to achieving many of the overarching WEP goals. The role of female corporate leadership, the fair treatment of both men and women colleagues, and equal health and safety and training opportunities are the cultural norm at NRS International.
